Busy, busy, busy...

This is the busy time of year for a lot of us. Just because you have not heard much out of ARC this fall doesn't mean we aren't still searching for ways to improve our organization. I know a lot of work is currently taking place to distribute the new edition of our ARCLight Newsletter. It also sounds like we have a lot more new members who have recently signed up. As a reminder, before the year gets away from you, try to fill out and return your membership renewal. Together, we will make ARC…

Charleston...and Beyond

The Charleston ARC meeting has come and gone. We had great attendance, an excellent tour. We handed out awards to some very deserving ag PR pros and we inducted two outstanding people into the new Ag PR Hall of Fame. Overall, it was a great meeting. And we surpassed a crucial membership milestone.

If you are a dues-paying member of ARC, you can also interact with other members of the organization by joining the …

Leadership - what does it mean for you?

Good morning from a fresh and sunny day here in Somerset in the UK!

At the moment I have an assignment on leadership for one of my postgraduate modules that is focussed on the wider topic of personal development planning. I would just like to share some of my thoughts with you all and would really appreciate your comments and own thoughts.

How to define leadership? Is it their ability, creativity, conflict skills, competitive edge, motivation, capability, communication skills,…

Golden ARC Deadline Extended

Preparing an entry for the Golden ARC Award Contest always seems to fall to the bottom of the to-do list … after the many activities required of public relations professionals in their day to day activities in the office, on the road and at home. However, this year, those waiting until the last moment to enter their best 2011 work in the 2012 Golden ARC Awards…

Hanging on tight for senior year

It's hard to believe it's already November. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was loading my car and moving back to the dorms for my final year of undergraduate studies. It's shocking how fast the time flies, and it's mind-boggling how easily we are swept up in the flurry of activity.

Today, as I try to sort through a seemingly-never ending pile of unread emails, I'm nostalgic. Freshman year, I had only had one job related to marketing and communications, and getting any sort…

And We're Back...

It’s hard to believe we are almost through October! I am back at Purdue and busier than ever. Of course classes are time consuming but there is so much more going on than just classes. As a member of the Purdue Ag Council I helped to put on two major COA, College of Agriculture, events, the ice cream social and hog roast. As a young business professional I have attended and networked with individuals at the fall career fair. And as a passionate agvocate, I have…

Goals - Objectives - Strategies - Tactics

Have you ever thought about where the terms goals, objectives, strategies and tactics originated? According to Col. Robert (Bob) Dittmer, U.S. Army, retired, the terms originated in the military. Bob was one of my instructors when I was working on my master's degree some 15 years ago, and it makes sense that these terms stem from military origins. During our APR study session…

Enthusiasm achieves rewards

Hi from the UK,

It has been a while since I last posted, feels like I have been so busy that time has flown by! I am now in my 2nd year of my part-time postgraduate degree, after averaging a distinction from my first 4 modules, which I was really pleased with as it was hard work and I had to make a compromise with my social life and my sleep patterns to get the work done! I have also changed job roles and location, and am now working across the south-west of England as a business and…

ARC Members Annual Meeting Set for Historic Charleston

It may be just September, but in six months Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) members will descend on Charleston, South Carolina, for the annual meeting March 22-23 at the Hilton Garden Inn – Airport. The annual meeting was moved from February to March by the ARC board to provide fewer conflicts for members during the busy winter meeting season of January and February throughout the U.S.

And although we won’t be staying downtown in the historic district (sigh, our budgets just… Continue

ARC/AMS to Partner Again for Silent Auction in New Orleans

Good Day. As many of you know, the Ag Media Summit (AMS) is taking place July 24-27 in New Orleans. For the third consecutive year, AMS and the Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) are partnering for a silent auction to benefit our two organizations to help defray expenses for students to attend the meeting.  Last year's Silent Auction at the AMS in St. Paul, Minn., was a big success, raising more than $3,500. Our goal this year says chair Deron Johnson, is $5,000.  And we…

Why Title Caps??

If you take a look at the news releases posted by PR Newswire, Businesswire or on PRWeb, you'll most likely notice they capitalize the first letter of each word in a headline.  AP style says only capitalize the first word and proper nouns. Does anyone know a good reason for these news wire services to change a good usable headline into one that does not follow AP style?

Teaching Kids About Agriculture

In my a recent post on my blog, I mentioned that I had done some “agvocacy” work.  I briefly noted that I helped teach local 4th graders about agriculture.  Well, as always the event, known as “Kids Day on the Farm” was a HUGE success.  I remember attending when I was in 4th grade, and the tradition has held strong.  This year, roughly 1,200 area 4th graders streamed through the Ag Expo building of our county fairgrounds, learning all sorts of different facts about…
