ARC is one of nine national organizations that can offer accreditation to members. Accreditation is a recognized level of excellence within the public relations profession and signifies a demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in the practice of public relations. An online study guide is available at the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB), for anyone wishing to investigate accreditation. People interested should allow for six months of study, followed by a readiness review and then a written exam.

Detailed information about the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) exam and application form to become a candidate for accreditation may be obtained from the Universal Accreditation Board web site at www.praccreditation.org.

Agricultural Relations Council members interested in obtaining accreditation can begin study by contacting Ken Gordon, APR, at (614) 790-1832 or at kdgordon@ashland.com.

The Agricultural Relations Council is the only association dedicated to serving the unique needs of public relations professionals working in agriculture, food, fiber and other related industries. ARC is a conduit for problem-solving, idea-sharing and collaboration among members, who share a passion for excellence in public relations.

Charleston...and Beyond

The Charleston ARC meeting has come and gone. We had great attendance, an excellent tour. We handed out awards to some very deserving ag PR pros and we inducted two outstanding people into the new Ag PR Hall of Fame. Overall, it was a great meeting. And we surpassed a crucial membership milestone.

If you are a dues-paying member of ARC, you can also interact with other members of the organization by joining the …

Leadership - what does it mean for you?

Good morning from a fresh and sunny day here in Somerset in the UK!

At the moment I have an assignment on leadership for one of my postgraduate modules that is focussed on the wider topic of personal development planning. I would just like to share some of my thoughts with you all and would really appreciate your comments and own thoughts.

How to define leadership? Is it their ability, creativity, conflict skills, competitive edge, motivation, capability, communication skills,…

ARC Announces Inductees to New Agricultural Public Relations Hall of Fame

Don Lerch, Lyle Orwig recognized to inaugural group of ag public relations leaders in program sponsored by The Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) and Agri Marketing magazine

FEB. 20, 2012 – NEW PRAGUE, MN – Don Lerch, founding member of the Agricultural Relations Council, and Lyle Orwig, with four decades of dedication to ag communications, have been named the initial inductees of the Agricultural Public Relations Hall of Fame. The program is sponsored by the Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) and Agri Marketingmagazine.

The two will be honored at the ARC Annual Meeting, scheduled for March 22-23 in Charleston, SC. The induction ceremony will be Friday evening, March 23. The board of directors of the Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) approved creation of the first agricultural hall of fame for public relations to recognize individuals for lifetime achievement this past year.

“Don Lerch and Lyle Orwig epitomize what agricultural public relations is all about,” said Mace Thornton, ARC board president. “Both men have exhibited a true dedication to agriculture and to upholding the invaluable role that professional communicators play in making our industry strong. They have helped pave the way, through example, for all of use who work in ag PR.”

Hall of Fame Committee Chair Deron Johnson said ARC is the proper organization to annually recognize ag PR leaders. “It’s time that people like Don and Lyle are saluted for their contributions to ag communications. We are eager to name other distinguished professionals in the years ahead.”

Lerch was one of 20+ people who met in Chicago nearly 60 years ago to discuss improving the image of American agriculture. The end result was what today is the ARC. His 66-year career involved ag customer outreach, farm broadcasting for CBS, among others, and his own PR firm in Washington, D.C.

Orwig has spent nearly four decades involved in agricultural publishing and ag communications at numerous organizations. He co-founded Charleston│Orwig in 1992, an agency that focuses on building strong voices for agricultural brands.

“We are thrilled to recognize these winners,” said Lynn Henderson, Agri Marketingmagazine publisher and award sponsor. “This new award program for ag PR professionals who have distinguished themselves and promoted this profession is long overdue.”

ARC will annually recognize ag PR professionals each year at its annual meeting. ARC is the only association dedicated to public relations professionals working in agriculture, food, fiber and other related industries. More than 50 years since its inception, the ARC provides premier professional development for agricultural public relations professionals in North America.

For more information about the winners, contact Den Gardner or Barb Ulschmid at the ARC office at: arc@gardnerandgardnercommunications.com. Or call 952/758-5811. Profiles of the two inductees will be available soon at the ARC web site: www.agrelationscouncil.org.
